In case you didn't know already...I love trivia. Especially pop culture trivia, because lets face it - I'm much better at it than say, geography trivia. I am HORRIBLE at geography. The other day I had Hannah explain the United Kingdom to me, in tems of what countries comprise the UK and some of the politics/history of it. I remember learning and memorizing all the capitals of the US states in 4th grade, but that knowledge has slowly faded over the years into a fraction of what it used to be. You may think thats sad and pathetic, but hey- I can answer random pop culture questions about 90's - oo's teen movies and television, celebrity gossip, Harry Potter trivia, and all that other stuff. Now who's sad and pathetic. Anyways, I bring this up because my cousin got Pop Culture Trivial Pusuit for his birthday last month, and Hannah, our friend Melissa, and I, busted it out for some fun times on Friday night.
Before the game, I have to mention - we finally went to the Duke of Edinburgh, a British pub that is in the shopping center across the street from my house for dinner/drinks before we played the game, and...it was interesting. Its been there for as long as I can remember, but this was my first time actually going inside- it was very red and velvet-y. It wasn't very crowded because it was only 8 pm, but I'm curious what its like later in the night...I guess I'll have to check it out.
So trivial pursuit - we played for a couple of hours because it frikin' takes forever to play pretty much any version of the game. The game started out for me with a question about Dawson's Creek and Andie McPhee - and I took that as a good sign - because you know I knew that answer! But there were still some pretty random questions so each of us slowly collected pie pieces. The hardest category for all of us by far was the sports and games one - its easier than the normal trivial pursuit because its not sports stats, but its still pretty random. One of the many "for the pie" questions for the sports and games pie piece that took me forever to get asked "Name two of the three fruits "POGS" were named after". I got one of them - Oranges. The other two? Passion fruit and Guava. RANDOM. Who knows that?! And why the hell were pogs named after fruit!?!
Anyways. A couple of hours into the game, I was finally getting asked the "for the win" question after pulling off an amazing comeback, from being two pie pieces down, to being the first to land in the middle circle. The category I got was Music, and the question was something to the effect of which band released a CD in 1978 that got them in trouble because the album cover featured a picture of Lucille Ball and... someone else, can't remember. I had nooo idea what the answer was so I just shrugged my shoulders and mumbled "I know know...the Rolling Stones?" and then clicked the screen for the answer.
THE ROLLING STONES
haaaaaaaaaa amazing comeback complete! I totally guessed and guessed RIGHT! That never happens to me. I'm the kind of person who always ends up picking the wrong answer on a multiple choice test when you've narrowed it down to two answers. Or I always pick the check-out line that is the shortest, but end up with a disgruntled customer asking for a price check or the paper runs out of the register. It was an amazing moment for me and I didn't stop laughing for about five minutes.
yeah, that was a pretty pointless story.
