Like he's back in high school
Yesterday a bunch of my Dad's friends from high school (that's right, high school) came to our house for their yearly reunion. Basically, my Dad and about five or six of his friends come together in a different location every year, and they come from L.A., Seattle, New York, and even all the way from Korea. A couple of their wives come as well, and they pretty much spend a couple of days playing golf, sightseeing a little, and playing more golf. This year they came to our area, and my Mom cooked up a BRILLIANT meal for all of them last night, Jeonju style. My mom was talking to one of the other wives on the phone when they got here, and she was telling her that it was just going to be rice and kimchee and I just rolled my eyes. First of all, I was standing right next to her grilling up some korean bbq ribs while she made a million other dishes. Secondly, it was just so Joy Luck Club. But I could tell everyone was impressed and ate well and Mom got to show off her traditional korean cooking skillz.
The thing with your parent's korean friends (especially the ones your rarely see) : they shell it out. I remember the last time one of my Dad's friends and his wife came to our house they gave Hannah and I each $100. Last night, the same lady shoved two $100 bills in my hands, one each for me and Hannah again. Now, there's a method to accepting money from relatives and especially family friends At first, you're required to refuse the money and either put your arms behind your back or use some other method to keep them from manually putting the money in your hands. Then, after a couple of insistings, you pretty much have to take it or risk them embarrasing you/themselves by trying to stuff it into your pocket or something. Its always appreciated though, so generous!
Anyways, you can totally tell that my Dad is super excited that his friends are here, and in the days before they came, he totally starting practicing his golf swing A LOT more than usual - didn't want to get beat by his friends! He even didn't play tennis because he didn't want to agitate his tennis elbow and not be able to play golf as well. Last night when they were eating dinner they were all loud and rowdy too. haha, I'm totally going to be like that with my high school friends in 35 years.
