I love to read

So ever since I was little and my Mom would drop my siblings and I off at the Sunnyvale or Cupertino library for hours at a time, I've loved reading. I remember taking home literally stacks of books from the library, and then just sitting around reading for at least two days. I read countless series of books, (Baby Sitter's Club, Baby Sitter's Little Sister, Boxcar Children, Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew, The Shoes books, and a million others I can't remember), and other random books, and I just loved it - totally a nerd. I also think that one of the best things about not being in school right now is the fact that I have a lot more time to read for pleasure. So it always comes as a shock to me and kind of makes me sad when I learn that someone hates reading. Remember, I embrace my nerdiness.

Yesterday I was talking to someone at work and we had both seen the new Harry Potter movie over the weekend. I was telling her how I liked it but that the book was better because there's just so much more in the book that they couldn't include in the movie. She told me that she hadn't read any of the books and that if she can watch something, she won't read the book. She told me that she doesn't like reading descriptions, and that when she does read she just skips over the descriptions and she only likes to read the dialogue. She said she tried reading the first Harry Potter, but the whole beginning was descriptions. I seriously hope my face didn't betray what I was thinking in my head. What the heck!?!? The descriptions are like, the most important part!! Most of the time they're more interesting than the dialogue! MAN, I don't wanna judge, but really!!?? My liberal arts-educated brain kind of imploded. I guess she's an accountant for a reason. I actually told her that.

no, I didn't. hahaaha

but I did tell her that she really wouldn't like any of John Steinbeck's works. Probably an understatement - she'd HATE Steinbeck, wouldn't get past the first page of the The Grapes of Wrath.

but then again, I still don't really know what these strange alien accountant people do. Everything she has to read for work would probably look like a foreign langage to me.
...but really, I'm okay with that. Harry Potter is funner than math - anyone who wants to argue with that is gonna have to fight me. I'll fight you!

This
NOT This
(although the movie isn't completely horrible)

while i can't say i've ever idolized accountanting as a profession, my respect for it just dropped a couple of notches when i read that post. that someone smart enough to do finance work isn't able to appreciate harry potter books (much less steinbeck, a personal favorite) makes me sad. it's a good thing i have some more thanksgiving turkey to cheer me up again. hope you had a great holiday.
