The most awesomely random perk of volunteering

Okay. So I love babies. Pretty much anyone who knows me knows that. I even spend two hours a week voluntarily feeding, holding, and changing the babies of complete strangers, different babies every week. One semi-sad part of the job is that we aren't allowed to kiss the babies - no matter how cute they are. The nurses regularly ask me if I'm still in school and if I'm doing this as a requirement, but no, I'm literally a volunteer, of my own volition.

So how awesome is it when you're not expecting anything for what you're doing, and something so randomly awesome happens that makes you glad you decided to volunteer for two hours instead of staying home to watch "So You Think You Can Dance."

I'll explain. This past Thursday during my regular shift of 7-9 in the nursery of the hospital I volunteer at, I was checking on the babies as usual when a new baby comes in, accompanied by the father - this happens regularly, I continue checking up on the babies. After a couple of minutes I look over at the dad again and observe that he's tall, athletic-looking, with slightly greying brown hair. He's standing near his baby doing what looks like stretches - I figure he's probably stiff from standing through the labor or something. I'm doing my thing, but the dad catches my eye again - there's just somethig about him. I look a little closer at his face. Pretty good looking guy, not basketball-player tall, but you could tell he was fairly buff at one point, and is still pretty fit. Look a little closer. Click.

OMG.

IT'S STEVE YOUNG!!

Awesomely amazing recently-inducted Hall of Famer 49'ers quarterback, of multiple Superbowl championships, and numerous career-ending concussions.

Holy Crapppp, is that him? It is, right? Is it?? OMG it totally is!!! I was freaking out on the inside, but keeping it cool on the outside. I was pretty sure it was him, but just to make sure I got a little closer. He started making phone calls to people - "Hey, it's Steve, etc...." TOTALLY HIM. Dude, Steve Young is like a hero in my area, I totally remember all the Superbowls and him and Jerry Rice and when the 49ers were actually good.

And I chatted with him! Such a nice guy :) I congratulated him, we talked about the baby, his other kids, etc. I finally got up the nerve to tell him I was a big fan and he took a picture with me! Probably not the most appropriate thing to do and I debated asking him, but I just couldn't let the opportunity pass. But he was totally nice about it. Put his arm around me and everything. hehehehhee

That would be my awesome volunteer smock. And Steve Young! So awesome. And so surreal. I'm all set for celebrity sitings for awhile.
